This peace symbol was designed by Gerald Holtom for the British nuclear disarmament movement. It is also known as the nuclear disarmament symbol, or the CND symbol.
The lines inside the circle represent the characters “N” and “D” in flag semaphore.

Gerald Holtom presented this design successfully to the Direct Action Committee on February 21, 1958.
This peace symbol was then first used as a symbol for a march from Trafalgar Square, London, to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in Berkshire on April 4.
