Cathode-Ray Tube Day

📺

On this day in history a patent was granted to Vladimir Zworykin for the first Cathode-Ray Tube.

Cathode-Ray Tube or CRT was the scary sounding technique used for televisions and monitors before LCD screens became popular.
Back in the time when these machines were huge and heavy!

Though it seems like CRT technology has become obsolete, there is a movement going on with people noticing that CRT still has some advantage rendering visuals when it comes to games.
Also some older films and series look better on CRT because they were made to have some light effects tailored to this specific medium.
Remember some of those SF and/or fantasy cartoons of the 80ies?
They went wild on utilizing the light intensity and even making use of the risk for “color bleed” to create unreal visuals.

LCD may be way more energy efficient, easier to transport, many times more compact and so easy on the eyes.
But we still think of CRT fondly …sometimes.
