On September 1, 1878 Emma M. Nutt, the first female telephone operator in the world started her job at the Edwin Holmes Telephone Dispatch Company in Boston.

Back in the 1800s telephone calls were made by telling an operator at the telephone central who you wanted to be connected with.
Hiring teenage boys to do this job was really cheap.
But complaints rose at several companies about rude behaviour.
The idea came up to hire grown up women instead because of their pleasant voices and better manners.
And that is how the cliche of female telephone operators started.
