When in January of 1978 a blizzard kept the citizens of Chicago inside their buildings, Ward Christensen and Randy Suess took this time to develop software to enable an early form of virtual social media.

Before the world wide web existed, people used their PC and a modem connected to a telephone line to access a computer that had BBS system running.
This BBS would enable the caller to download files, send and receive mails and maybe even chat with the system operator at the other end of the line.
When computers and modems became better and faster, BBS-games became popular.
Soon however, the world wide web made BBS obsolete and we now visit websites on servers instead.
