First official Groundhog Day celebrated at Gobbler’s Knob, Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania

On February 2, 1887, the first town wide celebration was held with a “hunt”, elaborate feast and “groundhog punch”.

Groundhog Day is said to be imported by Germans to the US as a celebration formerly starring a badger instead of a groundhog.
