Declared by presidential proclamation on September 24, 1959
December 17, 1903 was the day that the Wright brothers performed the first successful flight in a “heavier-than-air, mechanically propelled” airplane.
The plane called “Wright Flyer” was a creation by Wilbur and Orville Wright.
On this flight the Wright Flyer flew about 6 kilometers (4 miles).
This was a huge milestone that motivated aviation to take off significantly in the 20th century.
Over a century later, we can’t imagine a world without planes anymore.
“I confess that in 1901,
I said to my brother Orville
that man would not fly for 50 years.”
— Wilbur Wright
