January 19th marks a very special day for those who have a heart for art and artists.
It’s the day we celebrate the artists who are never afraid to push boundaries, question the status quo, and stand up for what they believe in.
These artists, who are often considered as outlaws, are the ones who challenge the norm and bring about a change through their art.
You heard it right! It’s time to don your artistic berets, brandish your pencil and unleash your creative rebellion, because January 19th is Artist as Outlaw Day!
Now you can finally make that sculpture of that raised finger without judgement.

As with most unconventional holidays, the origin of Artist as Outlaw Day is shrouded in majestical mystery.
Some say that Artist as Outlaw Day was born from a secret meeting of rogue creatives in a dark alleyway, where they plotted to overthrow the establishment with their art.
Others say that it was created by a group of artists who got tired of being told what they could and couldn’t paint or create.
But, whether it was birthed from a clandestine meeting or a righteous uprising, one thing is for certain:
Artist as Outlaw Day is a day to celebrate artists who push boundaries and challenge the status quo.

Throughout history, artists have been using their mediums to provide insightful perspectives on the world around them. And have always used their talents to challenge the norms, and shed light on issues that needed attention.
From the politically charged works of Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo to the thought-provoking guerilla street art of Banksy, artists have always been at the forefront of dissent.
They use their art to question authority, bring attention to social issues, and make statements that are often difficult to ignore.
Who needs Status Quo when you can have Art Nouveau (and all those other challenging styles).

So, how can we celebrate Artist as Outlaw Day in a fitting manner?
The most obvious and to the point way is to create a piece of artwork that goes against the grain.
You could host a subversive art show or perform a daring act of performance art.
You could even go out and put up some graffiti
(just be sure to do it legally and responsibly. We already have too many “penis-painters”. Be original and if you can, use spots with consent.).
The point is to do something that pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable and to challenge the status quo.

More laid back ways of celebrating Artist as Outlaw Day is by visiting your local art museum or gallery and taking in some of the works of these subversive artists.
History is there to learn from it.
So why not learn from the masters who gave their example of how to leave a very lasting and thought provoking message?

Artist as Outlaw Day is a day to celebrate the rebels and rule-breakers of the art world.
It’s a time to embrace our inner outlaw and make some noise with our art.
So, break out your paint brushes and spray cans and let your creativity run wild!
