The holiday for the most famous sundae ever.
Banana Split Day began as a local festival in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
National Banana Split Day celebrated how the first documented, and now certified, claim for inventing the beloved banana split could be traced back to their town.
It was in 1904 when David Evans Strickler found that while being an apprentice pharmacist, his real talents were in making ice cream.
David made the banana split to be the most elaborate and thus most expensive sundae on his menu, but it was by far the most popular one.
As with most food holidays, of course Banana Split Day soon stopped being a mere National holiday and is now celebrated world wide.
The classic banana split starts with a split banana.
Many people like them sliced or even cubed, but those are not true to their name.
Add about three scoops of ice cream.
The flavors are respectively vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.
Drizzle chocolate sauce and strawberry sauce in stripes over the ice cream and bananas.
Top with whipped cream and one maraschino cherry.
Further topping are optional.
Crushed nuts or sprinkles are often recommended.
