Barbershop music is usually an a cappella close harmony.
The lead sings the melody, the tenor harmonizes above the melody, the bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone completes the chord, usually below the lead.

This music is said to originate from musically gifted people keeping themselves and each other busy while waiting for their turn at the barber.

Barbershop music was the cutting edge of musical innovation when it began.
