Bobunk: The Best Holiday That Never Was

As the world gears up for another holiday season, one holiday is often overlooked, and that is Bobunk.
To those who have forgotten about Bobunk, it may seem like a strange holiday.
But if you think about it, what’s not to love about a holiday that involves cats, food, and wild indulgence?

Bobunk takes place on the third Caturday of November, which is the perfect time to celebrate the end of fall and the beginning of winter with a holiday that fits perfectly between Halloween and the Thanksgiving of your choice!

The Origin of Bobunk

The origin of Bobunk is has been forgotten like …it was magiced away?
According to the popular documentary ….I mean TV series “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”, the holiday was erased from existence and memory, just like Christmas was temporarely erased in the episode “Christmas Amnesia”.
The teenage withc Sabrina was handling a magic TV set to spy on her aunts and carelessly pushed the erase button on the remote. She did not realize that she didn’t just erase the recording on the television set, but erased all of Christmas.
It raises questions about what other holidays may have been erased because of the lax safety measures on magical objects in the Other Realm.

We don’t have any further concrete evidence of its origins.
Maybe it was once created by a group of wizards who wanted to have a holiday where they could indulge in their favorite treats without any judgment. Or perhaps it was created by a secret society of cat lovers who wanted to honor their feline friends.

Name of Bobunk

It’s unknown where the name came from, but some speculate that it’s a combination of the words “bobcat” and “drunk.”
Some people claim that the name Bobunk originates from the sound that a cat makes when it’s happy, “bunk-bunk”.
Other theories are that it was named after Bundt cakes because of how their shape allows for optimal infusion with alcoholic liquids.
Or maybe it was all “bunk” anyway that some magical black cat sold us so convincingly.
If you can record any evidence of this, please share it with the Bobunk hashtags.

Controversies of Bobunk

We suspect that the descriptions of cats, food, liquor, and food shaped like cats were not originally mentioned in the “Christmas Amnesia” episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, but were later added by individuals who adopted the holiday as a real-life celebration.
It’s not uncommon for holidays to evolve over time and for new traditions to be added, especially now we share information and misinformation with the speed of literal light!
It is still possible that the original Bobunk holiday was a celebration of cats and alcohol or had other elements that were lost over time. But those elements are actually all hearsay and copypasta.

There are some points to remember here to put these things in perspective:

  • The morals and ethics of traditional celebrations usually reflect the time of their origin.
Each time period has different priorities on matters of health consciousness.
  • Our main source of information on Bobunk is not a true mortal cat!
Salem Saberhagen is a notorious delinquent wizard who was punished to spend prison time in cat form.
His information is very egocentric and from the point of view of a nigh-immortal body.

What we know for sure from the original source is that it was a good holiday that should not have been erased!

How to celebrate:

Preparing for Bobunk involves stocking up on cat-themed foods, drinks, and aspirin for the expected hangovers.
Also, make sure to have a designated driver or plan for transportation.

  • Create cat-shaped food or cat-themed cocktails.
  • Set up a cat photo booth.
  • Create cat-themed decorations
  • Have a cat costume contest.
  • Have a cat movie marathon.
  • Host a cat-themed cocktail party.
  • Do a cat cafe crawl with your friends.
  • Drinks don’t need to be alcoholic, but they should be delicious!
  • If there are no cats, consider inviting some neighborhood cats if you can safely host them.
  • Consider if you can provide a good furever home to some adoptive cats.
  • The possibilities are as infinite as the number of times a cat can knock something off a table and pretend it was an accident!

Recommended snacks and drinks:

  • Fancy cocktails.
  • Catnip tea
  • Cat-shaped cookies
  • Cat-shaped sushi
  • Cat-shaped sandwiches
  • Fish-shaped cookies
  • Carp Bread

Safety tips for Bobunk:

As with any holiday, safety should always be a top priority for the wellbeing of all its participants, both the furry and non-furry kinds.

  • Bobunk traditionally involves copious amounts of food and alcohol, which can lead to overindulgence and potential accidents. Make sure to drink responsibly or stick to saver beverages and have a designated driver if you plan on drinking anyway.
  • Important reality check: in real life you should never give your cats alcohol!
Catnip, valerian or silvervine are safe but fun alternatives. These herbs have been confirmed by vets not to have harmful effects.
  • Finally, if you plan on celebrating Bobunk in public spaces, be respectful of those around you and remember to clean up after yourselves and your pets.

Revive Bobunk!

Bringing back Bobunk provides us with a wonderful reason to celebrate and enjoy time with loved ones.  Additionally, the focus on cats and their happiness promotes kindness and caring for our furry friends.
Even if it was originally created by a mischievous black cat or by some other unknown force, the fact remains that Bobunk has captured the imagination of many people around the world.
Whether we choose to indulge in food shaped like cats, or simply spend time with our feline friends, let us remember the funloving and irreverent spirit of Bobunk, and keep it alive for generations to come.

So, happy Bobunk to all!
