It’s time to raise a glass and tip our bowler hats to a most notorious and historic day – National Bootlegger’s Day on January 17th!
Today we celebrate the ingenuity, entrepreneurship, and resourcefulness of the bootleggers.
Who would have thought that a day to commemorate the sale of illegal alcohol could be so fun?
Why boot a legging?
For those unfamiliar with the term, it’s the act of illegally producing, transporting, or selling alcohol, particularly during Prohibition in the United States.
Bootlegger’s Day marks several key events that brought the bootlegging industry to life – the start of Prohibition, the distillation of Templeton Rye whiskey, and the birthday of the infamous gangster Al Capone.
And what better way to pay homage to the rebellious spirit of those daring bootleggers than by celebrating this momentous day?
So, what exactly IS bootlegging?
January 17th marks several key events in history:
It was the onset of Prohibition that prompted Al Capone and farmers in Templeton, Iowa, to take matters into their own hands and distill their own whiskey to sell.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Templeton Rye whiskey became a hit and became Al Capone’s favorite tipple. And, that’s why we celebrate Bootlegger’s Day on January 17th.
Now, I know what you might be thinking, but let’s not glorify or condone any criminal activities, shall we?
Instead, let’s celebrate the ingenuity and resourcefulness of those bootleggers who took matters into their own hands, and made the most of a difficult situation.
So, how can we celebrate this special day?
Well, you could crack open a bottle of Templeton Rye whiskey and raise a glass to the bootleggers who took a risk and made their own rules.
Or, you could host a prohibition-themed party, where everyone comes dressed as their favorite gangster or flapper, and enjoy some illegal hooch.
The options are almost as endless as the notorious drunk says their bar tab is.
So, how do we celebrate Bootlegger’s Day?
Why not mix up a classic cocktail using Templeton Rye, like an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan?
Or visit a Distillery and take a tour, learn about the history and sample some of their divine spirits.
Just make sure to celebrate responsibly, and remember, bootlegging is illegal (unless you live in the past, of course).
But, hey, it’s all in the name of history and a good time, right?
So, let’s raise a shotglass to the bootleggers and celebrate National Bootlegger’s Day on January 17th!
Just remember, friends, drink responsibly and always follow the laws as long as they are for justice. Cheers!”
