Checklist Day: Preventing Chaos, One Tick at a Time

Ever had one of those days where it feels like life is determined to throw chaos your way?
You forgot your dogs’ birthday, there is no coffee in the cupboard and all your pants are still in the washing machine that you forgot to unload last evening.
Checklists are our saviors, because in emergencies, memory can be as reliable as a rubber umbrella!

Checklists in Time: Not Just For Groceries

From ancient civilizations carving notches on wood to the digital checklists of the 21st century, checklists have been used for managing tasks, making travel plans and dodging potential disasters.
The earliest known example of a checklist is a papyrus scroll from ancient Egypt that contains a list of items to be packed for a journey.
Checklists became more widely used in the 19th century, when they were adopted by businesses and organizations to improve efficiency and safety.
Today, checklists are used in a wide variety of industries, including healthcare, construction, aviation, manufacturing and in everyday life for tasks like shopping, moving, and project management.

The Boeing B-17 Story: How a Checklist Could Have Saved the Day

The inspiration for Checklist Day came from a tragic event that occurred in 1935.
It was October 30, 1935, and Boeing was about to introduce their proud masterpiece – the B-17 Flying Fortress, a cutting-edge marvel of its time. A grand spectacle was planned for its first test flight that could change the course of history and also rail in a multi-million contract.
As the aircraft took off, the crew forgot to disengage the gust locks. With these locks still active, increasing altitude had the opposite effect. The flight turned into a tragic nosedive, killing both pilots.

This accident still changed the course of history, because a hard lesson was learned.
From then on Checklists became standard procedure for pilots because this tragedy could have been prevented if the pilots had used a  well-revised checklist. Checklists save lives and prevent disasters. Literally.

The Origin of Checklist Day

We don’t know exactly who created Checklist Day, but we do know why it was created and why it is celebrated on October 30th.
Checklist Day is celebrated on October 30th to remind us of the importance of checklists and to encourage people to use them in their daily lives. It’s a reminder of the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress mishap where a simple checklist could have saved lives and multimillion-dollar contracts.
Checklist Day is celebrated by enthusiasts worldwide, from meticulous planners to forgetful folks. Because mistakes happen, even to the best of us!

Why We Love Checklists (and Sometimes Don’t)

Checklists are more than mere scribbles; they’re power tools, so use them wisely:

Benefits:
  • Checklists transform a whirlwind of tasks into a manageable checklist.
  • They’re your backup memory, ensuring you don’t forget the milk, the cat, or the stove.
  • They motivate us to complete tasks and savor the satisfaction of checking them off.
  • In critical fields like aviation and healthcare, they prevent errors that could be catastrophic.
  • Knowing what needs to be done reduces anxiety and clears mental clutter.
  • Knowing what to tackle first and what can wait.
Drawbacks:
  • Checklists can be time-consuming to create and maintain.
  • Over-reliance on checklists can turn you into a compulsive list-checker and may stifle creativity and flexibility.
  • Too many items on your list can lead to stress and may make you miss the bigger picture.
  • Checking items can be delayed in favor of “busy work.”
  • When your checklist stares at you, incomplete, it can be a guilt trip on paper.
  • Misplacing your list can be frustrating.

Your trusty checklist should be your ally, not your dictator!

Where To-Dos Turn to Ta-Das!

So, grab your clipboard, make a list and check it twice. Because ‘I forgot the milk’ and ‘I forgot my keys’ should never be in the same sentence.
And if someone asks why you’re celebrating it by alphabetizing your bookshelf or color-coding your grocery list, tell them Wild Calendar approved and invite them to join the fun.
Happy Checklist Day!
