Lost Your Keys? Clean Your Room!
Ever feel like your room has become a Bermuda Triangle for socks and a breeding ground for hordes of dust bunnies?
We’ve all been guilty of letting our rooms resemble the aftermath of a party thrown by a tornado.
This is why we need the yearly celebration of Clean Up Your Room Day to banish the clutter, tame the chaos and restore order to our humble abodes.
Adulting sucks, but a clean room makes it slightly less suckier!
It’s a chance to rediscover that comfy chair buried under a mountain of clothes or unearth that book you swore you’d read “someday”.
The Good, the Bad and the Dusty
In the battle of cleanliness versus chaos, there are always two sides to the story.
Let’s take a look at the yin and yang of tidying up:
Benefits of Cleaning Up:
- Dust bunnies aren’t just cute fluffy floaties, they can harbor allergens and germs.
Banishing them means a cleaner breathing environment for you and your loved ones. - Letting clutter accumulate creates a welcoming haven for unwanted guests like dust mites, silver fish and roaches.
- Cleaning up might just help you find that long-lost item. Like that mixtape from 1989!
- A messy environment can clutter your thoughts and hinder your ability to focus on more important matters.
- Studies show that a clutter-free space can lead to reduced stress and increased feelings of happiness.
- A tidy space cuts down on clutter-induced procrastination and helps you focus on the task at hand.
- Less clutter means fewer tripping hazards (those LEGO bricks can be lethal!).
- A tidy home makes for a more welcoming atmosphere when friends come calling.
Drawbacks of Cleaning Up:
- Cleaning is brain-numbingly boring! Sometimes, Bingeflix and takeout sound far more appealing than wrestling with laundry mountains.
- Scrubbing, lifting and organizing can be challenging especially for those with mobility issues.
- Ever cleaned up and then couldn’t find something because you forgot where you put it?
- Parting with familiar items can trigger a miniature-grieving process. To keep or not to keep, that is the ongoing question.
- That room will be messy again in no time. Dirty dishes pile up and the dust bunnies seem to multiply like tribbles.
- It’s never tidy enough anyway. Someone will look at your your freshly cleaned room and tell you it looks like a trash heap.
- Sometimes, a messy desk can spark creativity! Just ask any artist who’s ever sworn by the “organized chaos” method.
The Origins of Clean Up Your Room Day
Now, unlike most “holidays” invented by greeting card companies , the origins of Clean Up Your Room Day is as tricky to find as the single sock that disappears in every laundry load.
Perhaps it was started by a desperate parent or a neat-freak who couldn’t stand their messy friends.
Others believe it was created by a vacuum cleaner company as a clever marketing ploy.
What we do know is that Clean Up Your Room Day is celebrated worldwide and it’s an excellent reason to bust out the broom and sweep into action!
Getting Down and Dirty
So, how could we properly honor this distinctive day of decluttering?
Arm yourself with a two-handed vacuum cleaner or a long ranged broom and wear a sturdy apron and rubber gloves for that extra armor class for when dust bunnies bite back.
Blast your favorite tunes, turn it into a dance party or put some fascinating podcasts in a queue and don’t forget to occasionally release some vicious mockery at any object that no longer sparks your joy.
Who knows, you might find that missing remote, or better yet, the other half of your favorite pair of socks!
If anyone questions your theatrical approach, just tell them Wild Calendar gave you permission to do so and that they’re welcome to join the fun!
Clutter is So Last Season!
Let’s dust off the past and welcome the sparkling future!
May your once-disappearing socks reappear and may your newfound clean space shine like a crazy diamond.
Happy Clean Up Your Room Day!
