Style Is Personal, But Respect Is Universal
Imagine being judged or even harassed just because you love the music that makes you happy, prefer socks in a style that makes you happy or wearing your hair in a way that makes you happy.
It might sound trivial to some, but these forms of expression can be deeply personal and are often tied to one’s identity.
The International Day Against Intolerance, Discrimination and Violence Based on Musical Preferences, Lifestyle and Dress Code (gasps for air) is a day dedicated to eradicating intolerance, discrimination and violence against anyone who is part of a subculture that may look different, listen to different music or have other hobbies than what is seen as the “norm”.
It’s a day with a name longer than a prog rock song, but just as meaningful!
The Origin of The International Day Against Intolerance, Discrimination and Violence Based on Musical Preferences, Lifestyle and Dress Code
This special day was inspired by a tragic event that took place on August 24, 2007, when Sophie Lancaster, a young woman who was part of the “goth” subculture, was beaten to death in Rossendale, Lancashire, in England.
Her story became a catalyst for raising awareness and promoting change.
Sophie’s mother, Sylvia, channeled her grief into a mission to ensure that everyone should be treated with respect and dignity, no matter what they look like or what type of music they listen to.
The Sophie Lancaster Foundation was born and with it, the Anti-Intolerance Throwdown.
This day itself serves as a global call to action to stop the senseless discrimination and violence that people face for simply being themselves.
Tune Into Tolerance
You don’t have to love what everyone else is into, but you do need to respect it.
It’s none of your business if your neighbor loves classical music and dresses like they’re attending a Jane Austen novel.
Can’t we all just get along, even if my jeans are tighter than yours?
Today’s Dress Code: Express Yourself
Let Your Freak Flag Fly
This Anti-Intolerance Throwdown is a day to embrace individuality and drown out the haters by celebrating a wholesome dose of expressional self-love!
Crank up your favorite tunes (even if it’s improv polka music, we won’t judge… much), rock that outfit that makes you feel like a million bucks and strut your stuff
Want to dance ballet while rocking a neon mohawk and roller skates?
Or you think plaid pants and a monocle are the height of your personal fashion? Knock yourself out.
As long as your self-expression isn’t, you know, summoning demons or blocking traffic, you do you and be sure to enjoy it!
Today’s playlist includes respect for every note, style and personal flair!
Let’s Harmonize
Celebrating this day could also involve talking to someone you normally wouldn’t talk to or exploring genres of music you have never listened to before.
Engage in events and campaigns that promote tolerance and understanding.
Share stories and experiences on social media to highlight the importance of diversity.
Attend concerts, fashion shows and cultural events that celebrate various musical and lifestyle subcultures.
The more we learn about each other, the more the barriers that divide us will be broken down and a more just and equitable society can be formed.
Most importantly, speak out against any form of discrimination or violence you witness or experience.
You Can Do It!
And if anyone’s giving you side-eye for your killer style, just flash them a peace sign and tell them you’re on a mission to make the world an excellent place (which, you totally are!).
Heck, maybe even invite them to join the fun. A little kindness can go a long way in disarming a frown!
Happy Day Against… Well, You Know
So, let’s turn up the volume on acceptance and rock this Day Against Intolerance.
Judging people by clothes is so last century!
Celebrate diversity, spread kindness because a world where everyone looks and acts the same is as boring as watching paint dry.
Now go out there, show the world your true colors and strike a pose against prejudice.
The world needs more individuality and less conformity.
