Long story short…
This day is named after a rape case where in 1992 the Italian Supreme Court ruled that wearing tight jeans meant that the rape could not have happened because the victim was too hard to undress.
This case was met with protest of the women of the parliament showing up the next day wearing jeans and gathering on the steps of the supreme court in loud protest.
News of this protest went international.
Years later Patricia Giggans, the Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, used this case as an example to declare Denim Day to be held annually as an international observance to protest the all too often occurring excuse “but what were you wearing?” used to dismiss victims of sexual violence.
