Butterbrot means literally “butter bread” and describes a slice of bread which is buttered.
The German butterbrot is an open faced sandwich with a layer of butter applied before adding further topping(s).
Traditionally the bread is made with sourdough (Sauerteig) and/or Rye (Roggen).
But many other types of bread, like the European classic yeast bread made with wheat, have become popular.
Toppings can be jam (Konfitüre), honey (Honig), peanut butter (Erdnussmus), cheese (Käse), sausage (Wurst), eggs (Eier), etc.
