Catitude On Fire: Celebrating Ginger Cat Appreciation Day
Let’s raise our catnip-tinis and pay homage to the coolest cats in orange fur couture! Ginger Cat Appreciation Day is an annual event held on September 1st to shower these vibrant furballs with the adoration they so rightly deserve.
Whether it’s the allure of their rich, sunset-like coats or the undeniable sass in their personalities, this day is all about letting your ginger flag fly high for cats that set hearts ablaze!
A Splash of Spice: The Science Behind Ginger Fur
Ever wondered what’s cooking in the ginger fur pot? The secret ingredient is a pigment called pheomelanin.
It all comes down to genetics. A specific gene called “MC1R” (or in simple words the “orange gene”) is responsible for their fiery coats. It’s like Mother Nature’s spice rack, creating hues ranging from pale apricot to deep tangerine.
This orange gene is dominant, so only one copy of the gene is needed for a cat to have ginger in their fur.
Ginger Myths, Busted! They’re Not Actually Spicy
Myth: “Ginger cats are more aggressive than other cats.”
Reality: This is not true. Ginger cats are just as loving and affectionate as any other cat.
Myth: “Ginger cats are all male.”
Reality: Since the orange gene ignores the Y chromosome in male cats, male cats have a higher chance to be all ginger. Female cats need both their X chromosomes to carry the orange gene to be all ginger. It is estimated that about 80% of ginger cats are male.
Myth: “Gingers are bad luck!”
Reality: Neither ginger nor black cats are unlucky. Nor any other colors of the rainbow.
Myth: “Ginger cats get their color from eating lasagne”
Reality: Please don’t feed cats lasagne. That’s only for cartoon cats that can eat anything because their whole world is ink, paper and dreams.
A Story Written in Fur and Love
Ginger Cat Appreciation Day is said to be created by Chris Roy who honored his beloved ginger cat Doobert who had then recently passed away by creating the app “Doobert” for coordinating animal rescue relay transport.
Both the app and Ginger Cat Appreciation Day emerged around this time, but the claim that Chris Roy also created the holiday was only made since 2019 by third party websites after he made a post in 2018 declaring he celebrated Ginger Cat Appreciation Day in memory of his late feline friend.
It’s a beautiful story nevertheless.
