Goth Style?

Goths are the coolest cats in the cemetery, keepers of the dark flame.
They’re the OG of self-expression who remind us that beauty can exist in the bleak and that introspection is a virtue, not a flaw.
Plus, they’ve got a killer music scene, great fashion sense and know how to throw a party that’s to die for!

May 22 is the day to let your inner goth shine or let it brood under a metaphorical rain cloud.
World Goth Day is your annual occasion to celebrate the beauty of the shadows with a little more extra flair and remind the world that black is indeed the happiest color.
Like Halloween, but with a much more sophisticated fashion sense and even more black!

The Origin of World Goth Day

The story of World Goth Day began in May in the year 2009 when a radio station in Great Britain was broadcasting a special set of shows on BBC Radio 6 that focused on various music subcultures for a whole week.
On May 22nd, they were playing Goth music and DJs Cruel Britannia and Martin Oldgoth decided to unofficially declare that day to be Goth Day.

The following year (2010) they decided to take the concept globally, both ‘as a bit of fun’ and to also create an environment of positivity and unity within the Goth community.
An official website and social media presence were consequently created with the aim of promoting the idea of a ‘World Goth Day’ and to also provide a list of international events which would take place on or around the chosen date of May 22nd.

Thus, from the misty moors of the UK, World Goth Day emerged, spreading its dark wings across the globe.

Goth by Any Other Name: A Dictionary Tour

While the image of eyeliner and corsets might come to mind first, “goth” actually has a surprisingly rich history in the dictionary.
According to our current stack of dictionaries, “goth” can refer to:

  • Historical:
Originally, “goth” referred to a Germanic tribe who overran the Roman Empire between the 3rd and 5th century AD.
Apart from the name, their famous attitude, tendency for paganism and accounts of looking pretty awesome, there is little similarity with the modern goth subculture.
  • Architecture:
An architecture style that was in use from the 12th until approximately the 16th century. It is characterized by high pointed arches, intricate stonework and a lot of stained glass. This style was used for the many dramatic looking cathedrals that we still admire today.
The aesthetics of Gothic churches are a main reason for how the goth subculture got it’s name. And imagine how well the acoustics of the buildings go together with most of the music of the early goth bands.
  • Music:
A style of rock music derived from punk, typically characterized by dark, mournful tones with lyrics that express sad, depressing, or mystical ideas. Or also often deconstructed by using contrasting dissonances between happy and sad elements. (Which is also a common type of goth sense of humor.)
  • Fashion Aesthetic:
Goth fashion favors black and dark colors. The themes are often a bit morbid, mystical, mysterious and of course a touch of ironic or otherwise paradoxical note for fun. The styles vary wildly between expensive looking chic to shabby sober black. Or a mix of chic and shabby to resemble a vampire still wearing their favorite shirt for centuries. (Because, you know, some shirts just get comfier with age.)

With this info update, the next time someone throws around the word “goth” awkwardly, you can impress them with your knowledge of its multitude of definitions!

It’s Time To Party Like It’s 1389

Whether you’re a seasoned goth or just goth-curious, there are countless ways to make this day special.

  •  Dress in your goth best, whether that means a velvet ensemble, corsets, or your favorite spooky shirt.
And maybe enough eyeliner to rival a kohl mine.
  • Crank up the old or new goth waves or maybe even some metal or classic if that’s your jam.
    Dance like there’s no tomorrow.
  • Dive your nose in some goth literature. Immerse yourself in the haunting works of Mary Shelley, Anne Rice or Edgar Allan Poe. Or some of those old “Tales From The Crypt” comics for a nice grimm chuckle.
  • Have a pleasant picnic in a graveyard (permission from the groundskeeper HIGHLY recommended)
Pack a basket full of tasty black snacks, like black forest cake, blackberries, black bean dip, black tomatoes, black carrots, licorice and maybe even some blood-red wine (don’t worry, it’s metaphorical blood, we’re not complete barbarians).
  • Decorate your place with black balloons, play some Siouxsie and the Banshees and serve up some red wine (or cranberry juice for those who prefer a non-alcoholic option).
Or host a viewing party for classic horror films.
    Or both. Both is good.

Should some sun-worshipping simpleton dare to question your gothic gallivanting, just unfurl your cape, fix them with a gaze that would even curdle soy milk and purr:
“This spooky soirée is sanctioned by the esteemed Wild Calendar. Now, be a frightful fiend and kindly join our festivities!”

Dust Off the Cobwebs

Whether you’re a lifelong goth or just someone who appreciates the darker things in life, World Goth Day is your chance to let your inner darkness shine.
Now, go forth and celebrate. Paint the town black, dance to the beat of your own drum and remember that it’s okay to be different. In fact, it’s more than okay, it’s fantastic!

Stay spooky, stay fabulous and have a great World Goth Day!

“A black cat crossing your path
signifies that the animal is going somewhere”
