Homemaker Day

Cozy homes aren’t made by house elves.
Cozy homes are crafted by homemakers, the most underappreciated jack of all trades whose working hours may sometimes even exceed the 24/7.
Homemaker Day, also known as Homekeeper Day or Housewife’s Day, is a much-needed yearly reminder that the art of homemaking deserves its own special day.

The Origin of Homemaker Day

Homemaker Day is a beloved grassroots celebration recognized around the globe, because many people agree that homemakers deserve more recognition than they usually do,

Homemaker vs. Housewife

The term “homemaker” is typically used interchangeably with “housewife”
In the age of ever-evolving gender roles, the term “housewife” has become as outdated as a rotary phone.
Nowadays, homemaking is a shared responsibility and homemakers can be of any gender.
An increasing number of men are choosing the role of full-time homemakers and it’s about time that our language caught up!

Not Just ‘Homebodies’

“Homemakers don’t work, it’s an easy life! Sitting around all day, sipping tea and watching TV”
Homemakers are some of the hardest working people in the world and often make the longest hours because their work is never done
Remember how in Tetris, when you do something right, then all your hard work becomes invisible? That’s what good homemaking looks like.
If you do it right, there’s nothing to be seen. Do nothing and nobody can deny the huge mess.

“Homemaking has no value and is not a real job”
Homemaking is a multidisciplinary job that involves finances, overall administration, social skills, cleaning, food preparation, dietary coach, gardening, pest control, first aid, events handling, counselor, repairs-of-absolutely-all-kinds and overall arts and craft skills just in case.

“Homemaking is for women”
The actual skills that you need aren’t your gender or even your private parts.
What you really need is the ability to be a jack of all trades and being handle a stressful job.

“Homemakers are uneducated”
Homemakers come from all walks of life and have a variety of educational backgrounds.
Many of them might also be juggling multiple roles and dreams alongside their home responsibilities.

Homemaker vs. Hired Help

Without a homemaker, you’d be dialing up quite a few paid services:

Without a homemaker, you might need to hire professional cleaners to keep your home clean

Laundry services cost money and you’ll still need to shelf it yourself.

If you don’t do your own cooking, then you will rely on takeout, dining out or hiring a personal chef

If there are kids in the house, then you will need childcare services and babysitters

Walking the dog, cleaning the litter box and giving your animal companions enough attention is impossible when you have a fulltime job

If you have a garden, or two, they require a serious day of maintenance at least once a year.
Even more times if you want it to look neat.

Hiring experts for the plumbing, electrical and other fixes

When the list of chores becomes overwhelming, you may need a butler to act as personal assistant and organize.
You will still need to hire all the above services because butlers also value having their own personal time outside your home.

If you desire companionship, that also can be hired.
The price will depend on the level of intimacy.
This shouldn’t be a service that is automatically expected from a homemaker anyway.
But some people seem to take this for granted.

The Yays and Nays of Being a Homemaker

If you consider becoming a homemaker yourself, you should consider wisely:

Yays:

Working from home means you can choose your own work hours.

You’re the captain of your cozy castle, you can make it just the way you like it.

You can save a lot of money by cooking, cleaning, repairing and organizing things yourself.

Cooking meals yourself means you can make them just the way you want and as healthy as you want.

Taking care of the families’ mental needs creates close bonds and a sense of belonging.

House mates that appreciate your work feels amazing.

Nays:

Homemaking involves countless tasks which go unnoticed when they’re done right. (The Tetris effect)
It’s often a thankless job.

The societal bias against homemakers just sucks.
People often see homemaking as a “lesser” role, like it’s not even a job at all.

Work-life balance can be a challenge.
The to-do list never ever ends.

Some homemakers may feel financially constrained.
Often there are no contractual benefits, like health insurance and paid time off.

Being a homemaker creates a large gap in your resume due to it not being seen as a real job.
This restricts opportunities for professional growth and career development severely.

Limited interaction with the outside world can lead to feelings of isolation.

You will probably face misconceptions about the role of homemaking.
The stigma is negative for any gender.
