Every year on October 26, we celebrate Howl at the Moon Day and Night, brought to us by Johnny DePalma of Umbrelly Books. He chose his own birthday as the date for this holiday, in hopes of creating a day where people can come together and, well, howl at the moon!
And if there’s anything that the world needs more of, it’s humans howling at the moon like wild beasts.

But is there a factual history of humans howling at the moon?
The short answer is yes!
From the earliest times, humans have been drawn to the moon and have howled at its full, luminous glory.
Some cultures believe it brings good luck, others thinking it drives away evil spirits. There’s even indication that our ancestors howled at the moon as a form of communication.
Also, howling is just an incredibly catchy activity!
So, why shouldn’t we join in on this ancient tradition? It’s a primal instinct that’s as old as time itself.

So why should or shouldn’t we howl at the moon, especially in the daytime?
On the one hand:

  • You’ll be part of a long and proud tradition of humans howling at the moon.
  • You’ll bond with other moon-howlers, creating a sense of community and belonging.
  • You’ll feel more in touch with your inner wildness.
  • It’s a great way to scare the neighborhood dogs and attract attention.
  • It’s a great stress reliever
  • You’ll feel closer to your inner wolf
  • It’s a great way to bond with friends and family

On the other hand, we have these drwbacks:

  • Your neighbors might call the cops.
  • You might howl so loud that you wake up the dead.
  • Your coworkers might start to look at you funny.
  • You might howl so much that you run out of breath and pass out.
  • Your neighbors may not appreciate the midnight serenade
  • You may accidentally awaken a sleeping werewolf
  • The moon may not be visible on that day, leaving you feeling a little lost

Now, how do we celebrate “Howl at the Moon Day and Night”?

  • Gather with friends and howl at the moon together.
  • Gather a group of friends and howl at the moon together
  • Take a night hike and howl at the moon during a clear night sky
  • Have a “Howl-a-thon” competition to see who can howl the longest
  • Host a “Moonlit Masquerade” where guests are encouraged to howl at the moon in their costumes

Now go out there, embrace your inner wild side and howl your heart out!
Let’s embrace this ancient tradition on October 26!
