International Flower Day: The Power of Flowers to Make People Happy

๐ŸŒทHave you ever received a bouquet of flowers unexpectedly?
It feels like a warm embrace, a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day, or a sprinkle of magic dust that instantly uplifts your mood.
Flowers have the power to convey a message of love, gratitude, sympathy, or celebration without words.
They are not just pretty objects to decorate your home or events; they are living symbols of hope, joy, and beauty.
That’s why International Flower Day is such a special occasion. It invites us to spread the joy of gifting flowers and celebrating spontaneity with random acts of kindness
International Flower Day is a celebration of spontaneity and random acts of kindness – perfect for anyone looking to bring smiles to the faces of friends or strangers alike.
Whether you are gifting a special someone, receiving a bouquet from a good friend, or simply admiring the vibrant blues and passionate pinks in bloom on this special day, it is clear flowers have won many hearts.

The History of Gifting Flowers: Why They Make People Happy

๐ŸŒนWhether it’s a bouquet of roses as a romantic gesture, or a single daisy to say you care, flowers have been used as a way to make someone’s day brighter.
Flowers have long been used to express sentiments and desires that can often be hard to put into words.
They’ve been found in religious rituals, weddings, love letters and more throughout history – even our own moment in time has seen a resurgence in Floral Fridays and โ€œflower-gramsโ€ sent between friends!
With their unique meaning and message behind every bloom, it’s no wonder so many cultures have a long history of gifting flowers. Whether itโ€™s a single rosebud signifying true beauty or an abundance of colorful tulips proclaiming undying love – humans have always found a way to decode the language behind the flower petals.
Overall, flowers are universally appreciated for their beauty, fragrance, and symbolism.
Scientific research has shown that the mere presence of flowers can have a positive impact on people’s mood, behavior, and well-being, reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, increase creativity, productivity, and social connection.
They are also a natural way of purifying the air and promoting biodiversity.
Therefore, gifting flowers is not only a mere nice gesture; it’s medicine for our hearts and souls.

The Origin Story: How International Flower Day Began

๐ŸŒบIt all started on a sunny day back in January 2013 when Rohan Levy and his daughter Brooke were walking through Hobartโ€™s Salamanca Market during their Australian vacation.
According to legend, they were suddenly gifted with a mysterious bouquet from an unknown stranger who abruptly vanished as quickly as he had appeared.
Now, if they had simply taken the flowers home and placed them in a vase, that would have been the end of the story.
But instead, they decided to spread the joy and kindness they had received by giving the flowers away to strangers passing by.
Distribution began immediately; 280 strangers later..International Flower Day was born!
And when asked why they were receiving such a lovely gift, the answer was simple – it was National Flower Day.

๐ŸŒธNow, if they had just stopped there, this would have been a sweet little anecdote to tell their friends and family. But these flower enthusiasts had bigger plans. They continued to spread the love and joy of flowers and declared that January 19th would now and forevermore be known as National Flower Day!
They didn’t stop at just celebrating in their little corner of the world.
Sowing the seeds of joy over the entire world through the power of social media, this celebration of all things floral grew and blossomed into International Flower Day that is still observed to this day.
Now every January 19th people from all over the world come together in celebration for this special event dedicated entirely to honoring flowers with festive activities such as planting flower beds, creating flower pieces for home decorating, hosting flower-themed parties or simply giving away single stems on street corners and railway stations.

๐ŸŒผAnd that is the tale of how a simple act of kindness led to a worldwide celebration of the beauty and joy that flowers bring to our lives.

How to Celebrate International Flower Day

๐ŸŒปNo matter where you live or what your circumstances may be this winter season can be done both simply or wildly elaborate โ€“ but definitely fun!
The idea is to surprise strangers with flowers, spreading kindness and joy.
Here are some ideas for celebrating:

  • You can start by buying or picking some flowers and giving them away to strangers, friends, or loved ones.
  • Organize a flower-giving event with your friends and family. You can all go out together and give flowers to people you meet.
  • You can also leave flowers in a public place where people can enjoy them and admire them throughout the day.
  • Spread kindness and joy by surprising someone with a beautiful bouquet.
  • Leave a flower on someoneโ€™s doorstep.
  • You can also get creative and make your own floral arrangements, host a flower-themed party, or even participate in a community event.
  • If you want something more hands-on than gifting some single stems why not try getting involved with local projects such as cleaning up parks or even starting your own makeshift mini garden.
  • Share your flower-giving experience on social media, using the hashtag #InternationalFlowerDay, and encourage others to join in.

Whichever way you choose to commemorate this national holiday be sure it reflects your own personal idea about spreading cheer during these dark times.
