Skeptics Day International

When:
🗓️ First Friday the 13th?
January 13?
October 13?

Where:
🌐 Everywhere

Since:
1996❓

Created by Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith in 1996?

Skeptics Day International, the holiday that’s so skeptical, it’s even skeptical of itself!
Was it really created by Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith? Are those claims even real?
Or was it hijacked by her or maybe even someone else, or maybe it just appeared out of thin air?
Did it really start in 1996? And is Skeptics Day International actually even celebrated on the first Friday the 13th of the year, or maybe January 13, or maybe October 13, or maybe all of these dates?
Confused yet? Good!
That’s the spirit of skepticism!
And that’s the whole point of Skeptics Day International, to encourage us to question everything, even the origin of the holiday itself.

So, why should we celebrate Skeptics Day International?
Skepticism is an undervalued tool in our daily lives. It helps us avoid being duped by false claims and misinformation. It helps us critically examine evidence and make informed decisions.
It also helps us avoid blindly accepting authority and promotes critical thinking.
The truth is, we don’t know anything for sure and maybe we never will.
Finding facts on an internet, where everyone and anything including the wifi-connected kitchen sink can write anything about everything, is like finding a needle in a cosmic haystack.
So, why not celebrate the importance of skepticism by embracing it in all its skeptical glory?

But how do we celebrate Skeptics Day International?
We could start by doubting everything, even the celebration itself.
Did it really start as a holiday for skeptics?
Or did someone hijack the idea for some nefarious commercial purposes?
The point is, we don’t know, and that’s okay.

We could also celebrate by engaging in skepticism-promoting activities like fact-checking, critical analysis, and questioning authority.
We could take it to the extreme and celebrate by doubtfully eating a skeptical cake.
Or we could have a skeptical party where everyone questions everything, even the party itself!

In a nutshell, Skeptics Day International is a holiday that may or may not exist, celebrated on a date that may or may not be correct, and created by a person who may or may not exist.
But one thing we do know for sure is that skepticism is important, and we should celebrate it in whatever way we see fit, as long as we question everything, even the celebration itself.
So, grab your cake of doubt and let’s get ready to party in the most skeptical way possible!
But, wait a minute, did you even bake that cake or did someone else?
And is that party even happening or is it all just in your head?
Happy Skeptics Day!
