“Happiness is: Espresso macchiato with one perfect drop of milk.”
☕
Cafe macchiato is Italian for “stained milk”.
The traditional way to make cafe macchiato is an espresso with a bit of hot milk added.
Preferably hot foamed milk and even better with a hot foamed milk drawing on top.
But only a little bit of hot foamed milk or else it’s a cappuccino or worse, a latte.
A popular trend that gives any food snob Italian a thorough food shock is the latte macchiato where a bit of espresso is added to a cup of foam.
Therefore the name which now means “stained milk”
So when ordering macchiato, you’d better specify explicitly if you want the latte or the cafe.
Because not everybody speaks Italian.
And worse, not everybody speaks proper coffee language.
