What would you do if you’d get lost without a compass or without using navigation apps?

Imagine how we could get around when we have nothing to aid us in navigation when we enter territory that is not familiar.
We learned to rely on compasses and maps and now we even have tiny pocket computers that do all the navigation for us!
Many of us play games that require navigational gear like geocaching and other location based games.

How do we know how to navigate without any helping objects?
There are some ways that can help us by using our senses.
The sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
So when you know for sure if it’s morning or afternoon/evening, then you have some idea of direction.
At night you can try to locate the North Star, which is called that for a reason.
The North Star can be found at the end of the handle of the Big Dipper.
If you are really desperate you can look at which side of the tree the moss grows.

On the Northern Hemisphere this is often on the North side and on the Southern Hemisphere this is often on the South side.
However, moss does not really care about North or South and just cares about getting enough sun and moisture. So result may vary wildly especially in the wild.
