Mead: The beeβs knees of beverages. π―π₯
Raise Your Goblets and Let’s Get Buzzed
Attention all you connoisseurs of fermented delight, grab your goblet and raise it high!
Weβre going to celebrate a beverage older than your grandma’s side-eye. Mead! The drink of the gods, the nectar of the Norse, the ancient ambrosia that puts the “buzz” in “buzzworthy.”
Yes, on the first Saturday of August, mere mortals like us get to toast to International Mead Day.
Sweetness in every sip, history in every drop!
The Golden Elixir Of Yore, Today
For those of you who arenβt yet mead mavens, did you know that mead is considered one of the oldest alcoholic beverages?
From the Vikings to the Celts to the Greeks, mead has been the drink of choice for anyone looking to add a little myth and magic to their merry-making. Made from fermented honey, water and sometimes fruits, spices, grains or hops, itβs a drink with a history as rich as its flavor. Its versatility and unique flavors make it a must-try for anyone with an adventurous palate.
The original elixir of the gods, now in a bottle near you!
The Origin of International Mead Day
Rewind back to the year of 2002. The Y2K bug didnβt bite, Britney Spears is at the top of the charts and the American Homebrewers Association decides the world needs more mead! The idea was to encourage home brewing, sharing the delights of this golden glory with friends and fellow enthusiasts and create a community of mead makers and tasters.
Fast forward to today and this celebration has become a staple for anyone who knows their hydromel (a synonym of mead sometimes used for meads with lower alcohol content) from their metheglin (spicy mead).
Since 2023, the American Homebrewers Association decided to move on to broader fermentation pastures by changing International Mead Day into Home Fermentation Day.
But mead lovers, being the rebellious honey badgers they are, keep celebrating this day as International Mead Day independently.
Get Your Buzz On Like a Bumblebee!
So, how can you make the most of this magnificent mead-veneration day? Well, the possibilities are as endless as the summer sun!
To truly honor International Mead Day, one must dive headfirst into the magical world of mead.
The celebration traditionally includes tasting events, brewing demonstrations and discussions about different mead styles and techniques. Sample the good stuff, from the light and bubbly to the deep and mysterious.
Itβs educational and intoxicating, quite the combo!
You canβt find any local events?
Gather your hive and organize a mead-tastic tasting with friends and family. Blind taste tests, honey-infused snacks and some good old-fashioned revelry are a must.
Or perhaps you fancy yourself a bit of an alchemist?
Try your hand at brewing your own mead at home! Many meaderies and homebrew shops offer workshops where you can learn the ancient art of mead making.
And if anyone asks why you are dressed up like a Norse god and drinking from a horn, just tell them Wild Calendar Wild Calendar gave you permission and invite them to join the fun! The more, the merrier, after all!
Honey, Let’s Get Buzzed!
So, raise your goblets, my feral friends and toast to the golden nectar and legendary tales. Brew, sip, repeat!
May your cups be ever full and may your laughter be as bubbly as the fermentation process.
π₯ Cheers or as we say in the Mead Kingdom: βBee happy because life is brew-tiful!β π―
