Behind every great human is a mom who probably told them to eat their vegetables. 👨👧👦🌐🌼
Toast To The Woman Who (Probably) Taught You To Adult
Mother’s Day isn’t just about showering Mom with flowers and chocolates. It’s a chance for us to give thanks to mothers who have been great parents for their children.
If you’re a mother and you haven’t been good, you deserve coal, but probably you’re lucky and will still get a polite gift or just a card to show off.
This annual homage to motherhood is celebrated on the second Sunday of May in many parts of the world.
The History of Mother’s Day: From Wholesome to Hallmark
Contrary to popular belief, Mother’s Day wasn’t invented by a greeting card company in a desperate bid to sell more mushy verses. Nor was it invented by a dictator who wanted women to produce more babies. The truth is that this holiday came genuinely from the sincere love of a child for their mother.
It all began with Anna Jarvis, an American woman who wanted to honor her own mother’s work as well as mothers in general. She organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration in 1908. By 1914, her dream became a reality when Mother’s Day was declared an official U.S. holiday.
Anna later regretted the commercialization of the whole thing when Mother’s Day became an obligatory shopping spree for expensive gifts rather than about giving praise and thanks to deserving mothers.
There are many stories about how Anna Jarvis ended up in a sanitarium funded by floral and greeting card industries. None of these stories can be reliably confirmed, but the fact that they funded it still fuels many conspiracy stories until this very day.
So, How Do We Properly Pamper Mom (Without Breaking the Bank)
Now, how do we show our appreciation for the women who gave us life and put up with our terrible twos (and threes, and fours…)?
Here are some ideas:
- Breakfast in Bed is a classic for a reason. Bonus points for a breakfast tray decorated with napkins folded into hearts.
- Flowers are always a classic, but this year, why not ditch the wilting bouquet and write Mom a heartfelt letter detailing all the questionable life choices you made that somehow turned out okay.
- Pamper Mom with a homemade sugar scrub and a cucumber eye mask fashioned from, well, cucumbers.
Just maybe warn her about the whole “slipping in the shower with a face mask on” hazard first. - Create a “Mom-umentary” and fill it with embarrassing childhood photos, heartfelt messages and maybe even a guest appearance from your childhood goldfish.
- Serenade your mom with her favorite ’80s power ballad, in public, with full choreography.
- Spend the day with your mom doing an activity she loves. Maybe take a cooking class together, do a sports activity or visit a VR place and shoot some zombies together?
And if any neighbor questions your shenanigans, just tell them Wild Calendar gave you permission and invite them to join the fun!
A Mother of a Conclusion
So, that was a brief history of Mother’s Day and some celebration inspiration. Now, go forth and make your mama proud. (Or embarrassed)
Now, go forth and celebrate the amazing women who wrangled you from tiny terrors into semi-functional adults.
Happy Mother’s Day!
