Over-breeding and inbreeding: Not cool, not cute. π§¬πΆπ±π°πΎ
Paws and Reflect
Pet birth defects are any abnormalities that occur in a pet during development. They can range from minor to severe, and can affect a pet’s physical appearance, behavior or health.
In other words: For generations breeders were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should. (We know from, ehm.. a famous documentary, how that ended in disaster)
Join the pack in giving pets the life they deserve!
The Origin of Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day
Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day was founded in 2014 by David Rogers, a pet advocate and the founder of the MBJungle Foundation.
He wanted to raise awareness about the importance of preventing and caring for our pets’ birth defects and to help educate pet owners about the causes and symptoms of these conditions.
Common Causes of Pet Birth Defects
Some birth defects are caused by inherited genes.
This can happen when both parents happen to carry a gene for a birth defect or when a mutation occurs in a gene.
Inbreeding occurs when closely related animals are bred together.
This can increase the risk of birth defects, as it can increase the chances that both parents will pass on the same harmful gene.
Some birth defects can be caused by environmental factors, such as exposure to toxins or radiation.
(Sadly, these exposures rarely, if ever, lead to superpowers.)
A mother’s health during pregnancy can also affect the risk of birth defects in her offspring.
A Checklist for Responsible Pet-Parenting
There are a number of things that we can do to help prevent pet birth defects, including:
Adopting a pet from a shelter is a great alternative to buying from breeders.
Many shelter pets are already spayed or neutered and they have been screened for health problems.
Only buy pets from a reputable breeder who prioritizes health over looks and tests their animals for genetic diseases.
Spaying and neutering pets helps to prevent unplanned litters, which reduce the number of pets that are born with birth defects.
Providing pets that do reproduce with a healthy environment can help to reduce the risk of birth defects.
This includes feeding your pet a balanced diet, providing them with plenty of exercise and keeping them away from toxins and other environmental hazards.
How You Can Lend a Paw
There are several ways that you can help to raise awareness about Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day.
You can:
- Learn about the causes of pet birth defects
- Support organizations dedicated to pet health and welfare.
- Spay or neuter your pets to curb overpopulation.
- Consider adopting from shelters to reduce the demand for pet breeding.
- Talk to your friends and family about pet birth defects.
Every small act of kindness adds up to a world where pets live their best lives.
