The Number That Baked Its Way into Life
March 14th isn’t just another day on the calendar. It’s Pi Day, a celebration of that mystical, never-ending number, π (approximately 3.14159…).
A glorious day dedicated to the mystical, never-ending number, π (approximately 3.14159…)
Neverending, fascinating and oh so delicious!
The Origin of Pi Day
But how did this ode to circles come to be?
In 1988, a physicist named Larry Shaw, working at the Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco, decided the world needed a day to celebrate pi. Numbers get a bad reputation for being dull and boring. But a number with a name like pi is punny and therefore funny!
And let’s not forget the pie. Pi Day provides a whole extra day in the year to celebrate tasty pastries!
March 14th (3/14 in the US date format) was chosen for the date, making it the prime day for all things circular and irrational.
Pi Day was an instant hit with math enthusiasts and pie lovers alike.
From baking pi-shaped treats to organizing pi recitation contests, Pi Day has become a fun and engaging way to learn about math and appreciate the beauty of pi, proving that even numbers can have a party!
So, next time you see someone sporting a pi t-shirt or chowing down on a particularly circular pastry on March 14th, you’ll know exactly why.
The Why of Pi
Let’s talk about our star of the show: π.
Pi (π) might seem like just another Greek letter lost in a sea of symbols, but this little guy is a mathematical powerhouse! Pi represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference (the distance around the circle) to its diameter (the line that goes straight through the center).
Too many dry big words?
Imagine a perfectly round pizza. Yum! Pi helps you figure out how much crust you get compared to the delicious, cheesy goodness in the middle!
But, with as much ease (okay a little more effort) pi can also calculate the spirals of our galaxy,
Pi pops up everywhere in the world of shapes and sizes. Pi is an essential part of the extended functions on your calculator app.
Unlike whole numbers like 1 or 5, pi is an irrational number. That means its decimal representation never ends and never repeats. We usually say that pi is 3.14, but the actual number goes on forever and ever and ever after the decimal.
And this is why we need a pi key built into calculators to save our digits.

How does one properly celebrate Pi Day?
Well, the possibilities are as endless as the digits of pi itself! Remember, irrational fun is the key!
- Memory Challenge:
How many digits of pi can you memorize? Challenge yourself (and maybe terrify your friends) with a pi recitation competition. Impress your friends, your cat and that judgmental squirrel outside your window! - Bake a Pi:
Bake pies! Apple, cherry, or even a transcendental quiche (because savory circles deserve love too). They must be circular. Don’t be a square! - Social Media π-zazz:
Don’t let your Pi Day festivities go unnoticed. Snap a pic of your π-themed creations, share your irrational adventures and flaunt your circular attire on social media. Use the hashtags #PiDay and #MathMunchies to spread the fun.
Irrational And Infinite
Life is short. π is infinite. Coincidence? We think not.
Now, grab a slice of pie (because, tradition!), celebrate irrationality, embrace the infinite and savor the sweetness. On Pi Day, we’re all a little π-curious.
So if some curious soul inquires about your infinite buffet of pies, just inform them that Wild Calendar gave you permission to celebrate irrationally deliciously. And why not invite them to join the mathematical munchies?
May your circles be perfectly round, your puns delightfully groan-worthy and your mathematical spirit forever irrational.
Happy Pi Day, You Irrationally Wonderful Being!
