Plant Appreciation Day: A Celebration of the Green World

Plants are the backbone of our environment.
From the towering trees to the humble grass, from the colorful flowers to the nutritious food, plants are an essential part of our lives.
Without plants, human survival would be impossible. But we often take them for granted, forgetting their crucial role in our survival and well being.
That’s why we need a day to remind us to appreciate the wonders of the plant world.
So, grab your gardening gloves and let’s dive into Plant appreciation Day!

The Essential Role of Plants:

Plants provide us with the oxygen we breathe, the food we eat, the materials we use, and the beauty that soothes our souls.
Plants are essential to our survival in countless ways.
Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis, they help regulate temperature and play a big role in cleaning the air which is the foundation of the atmosphere that sustains us.
Plants also provide habitat and food for countless animals, which are crucial links in the ecosystem.
In addition, plants have medicinal properties that have been used for millennia to treat and cure various diseases.
And let’s not forget the aesthetic and psychological benefits of plants, which have a calming and uplifting effect on our minds and bodies.
In a way, every plant on this planet makes the earth livable for us.

The Creation of Plant Appreciation Day

Marion Owen, a gardening expert and author from Alaska, created Plant Appreciation Day in 1998 to encourage people to appreciate the beauty and value of plants.
This holiday takes place on April 13th each year, which is the birthday of Thomas Jefferson, a renowned horticulturist and botanist. He was also the third president of the United States, and his love for plants is well documented. ( As was his love for sowing his seeds in a less wholesome way when it came to his relations with victims of slavery. But that is a different story. )
April 13th is also around the time when plants begin to emerge from their winter slumber in the Northern Hemisphere.
