The purpose of Pumpkin Day is to prepare a pumpkin for Halloween by making it into a cool Jack-o-Lantern by hollowing it out, carving some cool shapes into it and then put a light in it.

Beware however that bullies and disgruntled trick and treaters have their own sacred tradition of smashing pumpkins of people they don’t like for some reason or just because.

Centuries ago we would use several kinds of vegetables for carving lanterns.
As long as we could put a candle in it, it was good enough!
Turnips used to be a popular choice when Halloween was only celebrated in Europe.

When Europeans came to the North America pumpkins became popular as a choice.
And pumpkin is much easier to hollow out and carve than most vegetables and they can easily stand on their own instead of needing to be hung up.
