Reek Sunday is a ritual of at least 1500 years old.
Pilgrims climb the mountain Croagh Patrick (nicknamed “the Reek”) in the honor of saint Patrick who climbed this mountain many centuries ago and fasted there for 40 days.
It is believed that Reek Sunday actually predated the Christian ritual and used to be associated with the ancient harvest festival of Lughnasadh.
