The origins of who started the event for Sled Dog Day is not documented.
Well documented is how the date of February 2 was the date in 1925 when a delivery of diphtheria antitoxin was delivered by dog sled to a hospital in Nome, Alaska.
This event is known in history as the 1925 serum run to Nome
The hospital in Nome had just discovered their whole batch of antitoxin was expired while they were dealing with a severe outbreak. On top of this disaster the usual deliveries by ship had become impossible due to such extreme weather that rivers had frozen over so bad, no ships could break the ice. The only hope was delivery by dog sled, but the route was long and dangerous.
A tag team of dog sled teams took the journey to save this faraway arctic town.
On February 2, the first delivery of antitoxin was made.
