It originated centuries ago when Portuguese missionaries brought over the technique of fritter-cooking to Nagasaki. Tempura was then deep-fried in lard with a batter of flour, water, eggs, and salt.
This crisp classic would eventually become one of the Edo period’s famous delicacies!In Tokyo Bay area the ingredients and preparation changed and became popular as a fast food eaten at outdoor food stalls with additional ingredients including fresh seafood.
Today we dip our tempura into sauces with grated daikon before feasting on this fried food fiesta – just remember no indoor frying allowed!

And the ingredients you can tempura are endless, seafood, vegetables, meats, and even fruits. There are countless tempura recipes available online, ranging from classic seafood tempura to creative twists like tempura ice cream.
- Why not take it to the next level and have a tempura party? Invite your friends over and have a tempura cook-off. See who can come up with the most creative and delicious tempura recipe. And don’t forget to wash it all down with a cold beer or sake, the perfect accompaniment to tempura.
- Not feeling up to the task of deep-frying at home? No problem! Many Japanese restaurants offer tempura as a menu item. Go tempura-spotting: Head to your local sushi restaurant and see how many different tempura dishes you can spot on the menu.
Try your hand at making tempura at home:
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup corn starch
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt1 cup cold water
Instructions:
