International Waffle Day is technically a spin off from a religious holiday before it started a life on it’s own.
The catholic celebration of “Feast of the Annunciation” is in Sweden called “Vårfrudagen”.
And “Vårfrudagen” was often misheard as “Våffeldagen” which is Swedish for “waffle days”.
With the ideas of waffles planted into hungry minds, the Feast of the Annunciation was nicknamed “Waffle Days” and celebrated with waffles.
The “Waffle Days” caught the atttention of non-catholics who also liked waffles, so they started to celebrate “Waffle Days” without the religious part attached.
And… because people outside of Sweden also like waffles, Waffle Day soon became International Waffle Day!
