Ever heard of a day dedicated to confusing aliens with our excellent taste in clothing?
It’s time to don your best violet hues because May 16 marks the celestial celebration known as Wear Purple for Peace Day. That’s the day when we collectively paint the town purple, sending a signal to the cosmos that we’re ready to welcome peace, love and to exchange friendship bracelets with beings from other planets.

Now, you might be thinking, “Wait, what? Purple, peace and aliens? What even connects these three things?”
Great question!

Purple: The Universal Language of Peace

Now, why on Earth, or rather, why in the cosmos, would our hypothetical aliens have a soft spot for purple?
Legend has it that a long time ago, someone, who may or may not have been an extraterrestrial, convinced us earthlings that aliens have a soft spot for this royal color, associating it with peace. Whether it’s the calming blend of blue and red or the fact that this color could be the symbol of intergalactic diplomacy, we can’t say for sure. Also, whether this person was an alien or a terran with an overactive imagination, we may never know.
But hey, who are we to argue with interstellar fashion?

The Origin Story That We Heard On The Grapevine

Was the founder an alien enthusiast, a purple-loving peace activist, a prankster who imbibed one too many space edibles, or perhaps a genuine extraterrestrial in disguise? Some say it all started back in 1998, while others swear it dates back to the funky 1970s. Unfortunately, there’s no concrete evidence to support any of these claims, making the origin story more elusive than a cloaked Klingon bird of prey.
The earliest concrete evidence we could dig up is a newsletter mention from 2004, leaving us with more questions than answers.
But let’s not get tangled in the time warp.
The important thing is, we’ve got a day dedicated to peace, purple and possibly befriending one or more alien pals!

How to Celebrate Like a Starlord

Dress in your finest purple apparel, from your socks to your hat and even your underwear if you’re feeling particularly festive.
Bake purple cupcakes, paint your nails purple or dye your hair a vibrant violet. Decorate your home, your office or even put a nice purple bow on your dog. 

But why stop there? Let’s go all out!
Paint your house purple, dye your transport vehicle purple, eat only purple food for the day. Craft a giant peace sign on a purple flag and proudly display it in front of your house. Tell your friends, your family, your pet hamster that everyone’s invited to join the purple peace party.
And if anyone asks why you’re doing this, just say, “Wild Calendar gave me purple permission to spread peace and goodwill across the galaxy!” Then invite them to join in on the purple power. After all, the more the merrier when it comes to spreading peace and goodwill across the cosmos.

Dress Purple, Save the Universe! (Maybe)

So, fellow Earthlings, let’s paint the town purple and show the universe that peace isn’t just a dream, it’s a fashionable statement.
After all, in the grand scheme of the universe, we’re all just tiny specks on a blue dot. So why not add a little purple to the mix?
