Terry Pratchett: Life and Legacy of a Fantasy Mastermind

Before we get into the juicy details of โ€œWear the Lilac Dayโ€, let’s explore the author behind the Discworld series.
The Master of Satirical Fantasy, Terry Pratchett was an English author who was well-known for his quirky, imaginative, and satirical novels, particularly the Discworld series.
With over 70 books under his belt, Pratchett was a beloved figure in the fantasy genre and won countless awards for his contributions to literature.
His writing style was characterized by his humor, satire, and parodies of various literary genres, as well as his exploration of human nature, ethics, and morality.
His contributions to literature were so immense that he was even knighted by the Queen of England in 2009.
He was also a fierce advocate for Alzheimer’s research, and he used his platform to raise awareness about this disease until his death in 2015.
His legacy lives on through his books, his activism, and his incredible fan base.

Terry Pratchett, a British author, was born in 1948 and began writing the Discworld series in 1983.
He published over 40 novels before his death in 2015. His writing style is witty, satirical, and always engaging. The Discworld series takes place on a flat planet that is supported by four elephants on the back of a giant turtle. The stories are set in a world full of magic, wizards, witches, and dragons, and are known for their clever commentary on contemporary issues.

A Fictional World That Changed Pop Culture Forever

The Discworld series is a collection of 41 novels that take place on a flat world, which rests on the back of four elephants, who themselves stand on the back of a giant turtle that swims through space.
It’s a fictional universe that’s home to witches, wizards, trolls, and all kinds of strange creatures, but is most of all full of a satirical take on pretty much any subject you can think of. To sir Terry Pratchett no topic could escape his creative ever-questioning mind. This broad take on satire was what made the Discworld series more colorful than even the fantasy theme itself.
The series is most often set in the fictional city of Ankh-Morpork, a bustling metropolis filled with magic, mayhem, and humor. The Discworld books explore various themes such as politics, religion, technology, and death, all through the lens of fantasy and has had a profound impact on pop culture and continues to be an inspiration for many writers today.
The series has inspired films, television shows, stage productions, and comic books, and has also been referenced in other media.
If you haven’t read any of the books yet, what are you waiting for?

The Glorious Revolution: The Inspiration for Wear the Lilac Day

Now, let’s talk about the reason weโ€™re all here: Wear the Lilac Day.
The holiday was created to honor the Glorious Revolution, which occurred in the Discworld book “Nightwatch”.
The book tells the story of Sam Vimes, a watchman who goes back in time and helps to prevent a coup against the Patrician. This event led to  a rebellion in the city of Ankh-Morpork who were protesting against the corrupt government which becamee known as “the Glorious Revolution”.
The Glorious Revolution was a turning point in the history of Ankh-Morpork, and it took place on May 25th, 1957 UC (Unseen University Time).

After Terry Pratchett was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2007, fans of the Discworld series decided to use the date of the Glorious Revolution as a way to show their support for Alzheimer’s research.
By wearing a lilac flower and having a hard-boiled egg with your meal of choice, you can show your support for this important cause.
