Blowing the Whistle on Injustice

Let’s take a moment to appreciate those brave souls who aren’t afraid to blow the whistle when they see something fishy going on.
These are the folks who, at great personal risk, expose fraud, corruption, bad business practices, safety hazards and other misconducts that could otherwise go unnoticed. They don’t just blow whistles, they blow the lid off corruption!
Whistleblower Appreciation Day serves as a giant global “Thank You” to these truth-tellers who risk their careers and sometimes even their safety, to expose wrongdoings in a world where silence is the enemy of truth.

The Origins of Whistleblower Appreciation Day

Whistleblower Appreciation Day, an event created by the United States Senate on July 30th, 2013, is a day to honor these courageous individuals.
It’s also a gentle reminder to organizations that there’s always a chance that truth will find a way out, no matter how deep they try to bury it.

But hey, why should the Americans have all the fun? We at Wild Calendar decided to go global and celebrate this day as simply “Whistleblower Day”.

Celebrating Whistleblower Day and Make Some noise

If you live in the US you might encounter some official events.
Since 2015, the National Whistleblower Center has hosted annual events to honor these valiant figures.

You can do your own celebrations by sharing a story of a famous whistleblower who made a difference.
Host a movie night featuring films like “The Insider” or “Erin Brockovich”.
Some people organize a flash mob where they all step outside blow a whistle loudly at exactly noon as loud as they can. (Be careful where you do this. You want to spread a message, not a health hazard)
And if anyone gives you a funny look, just whip out your imaginary Wild Calendar membership card (it comes free with every dose of curiosity!) and explain that you’re celebrating Whistleblower Appreciation Day in the spirit of artistic expression and truth-telling. Feel free to extend the invitation!
