The Day Love Gifts Back!
White Day falls exactly one month after Valentine’s Day, on March 14th.
On this magical day, those who received tokens of affection (we bet it was chocolates) on Valentineโs Day become the gift-givers.
It’s basically the cosmic “reply-all” button for all those chocolates and gifts that flew around on February 14th and the ultimate excuse to indulge in sweet reciprocity!
The Sweet Origin Story of White Day
Our tale begins in Japan, circa 1978. The air is full of cherry blossom petals and โฆmarshmallows?
Back then a Japanese confectionery company (Ishimura Manseido) saw an opportunity. Valentine’s Day was all about women giving chocolates, but what about the men?
“Marshmallow Day,” was launched as a marketing campaign that encouraged fellas to return the favor with, you guessed it, marshmallows.
The color white symbolizes purity and innocence, which is ironic considering the amount of mischief that goes down on this day.
The idea of a reciprocal gift day caught on, and soon other candy companies jumped on the white chocolate bandwagon.
White Day was born and the rest is sweet history.
From Japan to the World
Fast forward a few decades, and White Day has spread its wings far beyond the borders of Japan.
In other Asian countries like South Korea, Taiwan, and China White Day celebrations are similar to Japan’s, with men traditionally giving gifts (often candy or jewelry) to women who showered them with chocolates a month earlier.
And in countries like the US and the UK, White Day has taken on a more inclusive vibe, with people showering their loved ones (romantic or otherwise) with tokens of appreciation.
It’s not just about romantic gestures anymore; it’s about spreading love and appreciation to friends, family, and anyone who deserves a little extra sweetness in their life.
Black Day: The Yin to White Day’s Yang
Valentineโs Day and White Day had their moment in the spotlight, but what about the unattached souls? The ones who didnโt receive chocolates or love notes?
In South Korea there is a noir-inspired sequel especially for singles exactly a month after White Day.
Those lonely hearts band together on April 14th, also known as Black Day, to commiserate their solo status by drowning their sorrows in a comforting bowl of black bean noodles (jjajangmyeon). It’s a chance to gather your single friends, mourn the absence of love notes, bond with your crew and remind yourselves that being single is pretty awesome after all.
So, if you find yourself flying solo on White Day, just remember that there’s always Black Day waiting to embrace you with open arms and a steaming bowl of tasty noodles!
