Today is World Nerd Day, a day dedicated to all the brilliant, socially awkward, and endlessly fascinating creatures that make this world a more intelligent and interesting place.
📖

For those of you who may not consider yourselves “nerds”, let’s define the term.
But wait, isn’t being a nerd a bad thing? What about the dated cliche about nerds?
A nerd, according to Merriam-Webster, is “an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits”.
But, let’s be real, being “unstylish” or “socially inept” is just a matter of perspective.
And, being “slavishly devoted” to knowledge and education is something to be celebrated, not ridiculed.

Being a nerd is a badge of honor. It means you’re passionate about something, whether it be science, history, literature, or even video games.
It means you’re not afraid to dive deep into a subject and learn everything there is to know about it.
It means you’re a curious and inquisitive human being, and those are qualities to be celebrated.

So, how do we celebrate World Nerd Day?

  • Traditionally, you might spend the day reading a book, watching a documentary, or playing a board game.
  • Dust off that old Star Trek t-shirt and wear it with pride. Organize a marathon of your favorite nerdy TV show or movie.
  • Gather your friends and have a trivia night, with categories ranging from science to Lord of the Rings.
  • Throw a themed costume party for your favorite franchise and see who can come up with the most creative costume.
  • Why not visit a place that celebrates your nerdy interests? For example, if you’re into comics, visit a comic book store and have a look around. Or if you’re into science, why not visit a science museum and learn about the latest discoveries.
  • Take it to the streets and show off your nerdiness for the world to see. Host a cosplay parade, where participants dress up as their favorite nerdy characters. Have a “Nerd Walk,” where participants dress in lab coats and safety goggles, and walk around town spreading knowledge and information about science and technology.
  • And let’s not forget about the food. Have a “nerd feast” with dishes inspired by your favorite nerdy franchises, like “Hobbit Stew” or “Doctor Who Fish Fingers and Custard.”

So, embrace your inner nerd and celebrate World Nerd Day on January 9th.
Because, as the famous nerd, Albert Einstein, once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”.
And for those who are worried about being judged for their nerdy interests, I have one word for you: embrace it.
Embrace your love for Star Wars, embrace your love for Dungeons and Dragons, embrace your love for knitting.
Because at the end of the day, being a nerd is all about embracing your passions and celebrating the things that make you unique.
