Why All the Buzz About Bees?
World Bee Day is the day we pay homage to the small but mighty bee. These little pollinators are crucial for the health of our planet. Around a third of the world’s food depends on pollination.
But bees are facing some serious threats, like habitat loss and pesticide use. That’s why World Bee Day is all about raising awareness of the importance of bees and other pollinators for our ecosystems and food security and to promote sustainable farming practices.
Without bees, we’d be fruitless and flowerless!
The Origin of World Bee Day
World Bee Day was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017, following a proposal by the Slovenian Beekeepersβ Association. Slovenia, recognizing the threats bees face from pesticides, habitat loss and climate change, advocated for this day to promote global awareness and action.
The day was chosen because May 20 is the birthday of Anton JanΕ‘a, a Slovenian beekeeping pioneer born on this day in 1734. His innovative techniques and deep understanding of bees laid the foundation for practices we still use today.
