April 27th marks World Tapir Day, an day dedicated to fascinating, snouty rainforest dwellers.
Created in honor of the legendary tapir named “April” from the Belize Zoo, this day is all about paying homage to these fascinating creatures and spreading awareness about their conservation.
These fascinating, snouty rainforest dwellers are Mother Nature’s answer to the question you never knew you asked.
They’re more than just a big snoot!

The Tapir Tragedy

Unfortunately, the tapir family is facing a crisis, with many species teetering on the brink of extinction.
With only four variations left, it’s crucial that we step up our efforts to protect these magnificent creatures and their habitat.
From habitat loss to poaching, tapirs face numerous threats, but with our collective action, we can make a difference.
It’s a sad reality, but it’s also a reminder of why World Tapir Day is so important.

The Legacy of April the Tapir

Our story begins with a tapir named April, born on April 27, 1983, at the Belize Zoo.
For 30 years April stole the hearts of locals and visitors alike, becoming the poster child for Belize’s national animal. With her gentle manners and unmistakable charm, April captured the imagination of an entire nation and beyond.
As her fame grew, so did the idea of dedicating a day to celebrate her legacy and raise awareness about tapir conservation.

When April’s birthday celebrations caught the attention of the minister of state in 2008, her special day was officially declared World Tapir Day.
Of course, this wasn’t just a birthday party. It was a call to action  to learn about tapirs, share cool tapir pictures or videos and most importantly, help with the conservation of tapir species on Earth.

Since its inception, World Tapir Day has been well received by the public and is now celebrated annually on April 27. It has become a significant event in the conservation calendar, raising funds to support tapir conservation projects worldwide.

For 30 years, April reigned supreme as the most recognizable symbol of Belize’s national animal.
Her passing in 2013 marked the end of an era, but her legacy lives on through World Tapir Day, a celebration of her life and the species she represented.

Tapirs might look like oversized, prehistoric anteaters with a fondness for mud baths, but these rainforest residents are more than meets the eye. Appreciate the snoot, it’s very important!

With their gluttony for fruits and seeds, they play a crucial role in seed dispersal, helping to maintain the biodiversity of their habitat. They’re often nicknamed “the gardener of the rainforest”.

  Their versatile snouts are like Swiss Army knives of the animal kingdom, using their noses to grab food, sniff out danger and even communicate with one another.
• Stealthy Swimmers:
  Despite their hefty appearance, tapirs are surprisingly agile in the water, using their webbed feet to navigate rivers and streams with ease. They can even use their snouts like snorkels to explore underwater landscapes. 
• Living Fossils:
  Tapirs have been roaming the Earth for millions of years, having survived several waves of extinction. They’re like the Keith Richards of the animal kingdom. Their ancient origins make them a fascinating window into our planet’s past. 
• Survival Specialists:
  Despite their slow reproduction rate, tapirs have managed to survive for so long due to their adaptability and resilience.
• Gentle Giants:
  Tapirs are the largest terrestrial animal on the South American continent. They’re the gentle giants of the jungle.
• Zen Masters:
  Known for their gentle demeanor and peaceful presence, tapirs embody the art of living in harmony with nature.

They’re more than just a funny-looking animal; they’re a vital part of our world’s ecosystem.
