Historical events on February 2

- Patent filed for the vacant/engaged toilet lock
On February 17, 1882, Arthur Ashwell filed a patent for a toilet door lock that would display the "vacant" sign when unlocked and would automatically switch to "engaged" sign when locked. This simple invention still saves us from embarrassments this very day.

- First official Groundhog Day celebrated at Gobbler's Knob, Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania
On February 2, 1887, the first town wide celebration was held with a "hunt", elaborate feast and "groundhog punch".
