First appearance of the Rainbow Flag as a gay pride flag

The first Rainbow flag flew proudly at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day parade  on June 25, 1978.

The artist Gilbert Baker designed the first rainbow flag and helped by volunteers created several of them especially for this parade.
Gilbert would later reveal that no one less than Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S., asked him to create a symbol of pride for the gay community.

Thanks to the multitude of diverse colors, this flag would become the symbol of LGBTQ pride.
